Effectiveness & Efficiency
Effectiveness is the appropriate use of resources to produce the most appropriate outcome.
Efficiency is the most economical use of resources to produce an outcome or output without regard to appropriateness of the outcome or output.
Often in government management and departments get caught up in “business as usual.” It’s easy to do and many entities and corporations have been guilty of the same thing. (GM and Ford come to mind.) The current economic times challenge us all to rethink not just how we spend our money (efficiency) but what is our intent to achieve when we DO spend our money.
As Auditor I intend to become proactive in working with departments to better understand their core objectives and to define meaningful and attainable outcomes that can be monitored through measureable outputs. Governmental reporting puts particular emphasis on Service Efforts and Accomplishments and I plan to make these part of a popular report to better communicate to you, the electorate, what is being done with your tax dollars.
